Getting the environment into business

At Green Purchasing we have developed the 10-week Eco-Culture Program to empower people who wish to learn what it means to be sustainable. Touching the very essence of why so many of us feel overwhelmed by what this might entail, this program emphasises that to be sustainable we need to start with ourselves.

Both our economy and the planet's ecology are reaching a threshold, an evolutionary moment in time beyond which life will not be the same as it is now.  Many see a complete breakdown, while others see a breakthrough.  An either / or event which, more often than not, breeds complacency.  There are no guarantees, yet evolution requires a letting go of the old, and a making room for the new.

Contrary to popular belief, human beings are not flawed, but the underlying contradictions of our cultural mindset are deeply flawed.  These contradictions explain our dissociation from nature and why we are at odds with basic sustainability principles.  They influence our thoughts, decisions and actions, and are endemic in our society.  They are the background 'noise' we live by, but most people are completely unaware that they even exist.

Recognising how they play out in your life strengthens your will to challenge and transform them.  This enhances your ability to let go of the old and to work towards a better future for your self, your family and your community.

Sustainability is a reflection of our cultural mindset.

The three concepts, on which this program is centered, are briefly described below.  They have a common purpose: to strengthen motivation for change.

Eco-Culture starts with greater insight into the root cause of the problem - the way we think. This is not what we think about consciously, but where we typically think and act from automatically.

Eco-Efficiency is measured primarily as ecological profit.  When efficiency is measured as purely financial profit, it does not reduce consumption, it increases it.

Eco-Effective design is found everywhere in nature.  It is the only reliable blueprint for sustainability we have that we can observe readily.
